Judy Murray is a Scottish tennis coach, former captain of Great Britain's Fed Cup team, and a motivational speaker. She developed a passion for tennis early on and is the mother of successful players Andy and Jamie. Judy earned over 60 national titles in her sporting career before studying French and Business Studies at the University of Edinburgh.
Her coaching journey began as a volunteer at Dunblane Sports Club while her children were young. In 1995, she became one of the first women to pass the Lawn Tennis Association’s Performance Coach Award and was appointed Scottish National Coach the same year. In 2011, she became Captain of the British Billie Jean King Cup Team, significantly contributing to the growth of women’s tennis.
Judy has started several programmes to promote inclusivity in tennis, including Miss-Hits for girls aged 5 to 8, Tennis on the Road to bring tennis to remote areas of Scotland, and She Rallies to encourage female participation across the UK.
Her contributions to tennis have been recognised with numerous awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award at the UK Coaching Awards in 2019. Judy is a strong advocate for female inclusivity in sports, challenging sexism and promoting the capabilities of female coaches.
As a motivational speaker, she shares her insights on tennis, parenting, and overcoming adversity, captivating audiences at various events, including TED Talks. In 2017, she was appointed OBE for her contributions to tennis and female empowerment. She founded the Judy Murray Foundation in 2018 to enhance tennis opportunities in Scotland, particularly in underserved communities. Judy is a pioneering figure in tennis coaching, dedicated to promoting inclusivity and shaping the careers of her sons.
