Dick Griffin's biography

At a glance

  • Former Royal Protection Officer for Queen Elizabeth II
  • Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order (LVO)
  • Accomplished marathon runner and charity fundraiser
Richard 'Dick' Griffin LVO is a former Royal Protection Officer who spent over three decades safeguarding Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Philip. His career took him to 161 countries, where he played an integral role in managing the personal security of the royal family, particularly during high-profile international visits. Dick’s journey began in 1970 when he moved to London from Wales and joined the Metropolitan Police. He quickly rose through the ranks, later becoming a personal protection officer following a significant reorganisation of palace security in the aftermath of the infamous 1982 break-in by Michael Fagan. Dick's career as a Royal Protection Officer saw him protecting Prince Edward during his time at Cambridge University, followed by 13 years dedicated to Prince Philip before taking on the responsibility of safeguarding the Queen herself for 14 years. Throughout his career, Dick’s duties involved managing security for the royal family during times of international tension and conflict, including the threat of the IRA and later, Isis. He was made a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order in recognition of his outstanding service, retiring in 2013. Known for his sense of humour and dedication, Dick also balanced his professional life with a passion for running, completing over 230 marathons worldwide. His achievements extend beyond his career in royal protection, as his charitable fundraising efforts and personal running accomplishments have garnered attention and respect in their own right. Dick’s story is not only one of service and duty but also one of resilience, commitment, and unexpected moments of humour, offering a fascinating glimpse into a life spent at the heart of history.
