Mika Hakkinen, a two-time Formula One World Champion, achieved his titles in 1998 and 1999 while driving for the dominant McLaren-Mercedes Benz team. With an impressive record of 20 race victories and 51 podium finishes, he is considered one of the most successful and fastest drivers in modern F1 history. Hakkinen's talent was evident from his first Formula One drive in a less competitive Lotus car in Phoenix in March 1991. As a karting graduate, he had already won the British Formula 3 Championship in 1990. In 1992, Hakkinen joined McLaren as a test driver for the following season, supporting legendary drivers Ayrton Senna and Michael Andretti. When Andretti left the team in September of that year, Hakkinen took his place and made his F1 debut by out-qualifying the great Senna in Portugal. He spent the years 1994 and 1995 honing his skills and became the team leader after Senna's departure for Williams. Despite a serious accident at the 1995 Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide, Hakkinen fully recovered thanks to the quick actions of medical crews. Hakkinen's first Grand Prix victory came in Jerez, Spain, in 1997. In 1998, he clinched his first World Championship in remarkable fashion, winning eight out of 16 races. Although the following year proved more challenging, he bounced back and secured five more victories, successfully defending his title at the season's final race. By this time, Hakkinen had established himself as the only driver capable of outperforming Michael Schumacher, and the German publicly acknowledged this fact. One of Hakkinen's most memorable moments was his fearless overtaking manoeuvre on Schumacher during the Belgian Grand Prix in 2000, which is considered one of the greatest in F1 history. In 2000, Ferrari produced a highly competitive car, and despite winning four more Grands Prix, Hakkinen was unable to secure the World Championship, which went to Schumacher. Nevertheless, his victories in the British and United States Grands Prix in 2001 demonstrated that his performances remained at their peak. Hakkinen retired from Formula 1 racing at the end of that year. Following his retirement, Hakkinen competed in the German Touring Car Championship until 2007. Since then, he has maintained close involvement in Formula 1 through brand ambassadorships and business interests, including driver management. In 2022, he joined the Viaplay F1 broadcast team in the Nordic region, providing expert insight. He continues to be a familiar figure at Grands Prix and remains one of the most popular personalities in Formula 1.
