Robert Guest's biography

At a glance

  • Award-winning Deputy Editor of The Economist
  • Former Foreign, US, and Business Editor of The Economist
  • Author of The Shackled Continent and Borderless Economics

Robert Guest is Deputy Editor of The Economist, where his reporting on global business and geopolitics draws on assignments in more than 100 countries and stints living in six of them.

He was previously Foreign Editor, US Editor, and Business Editor, and has served as Washington correspondent, Lexington columnist, and Africa Editor. Before joining The Economist, he was the Daily Telegraph's Tokyo correspondent, having previously been based in South Korea. He has won numerous international awards.

Robert is also the author of The Shackled Continent, which explores how Africa could become richer, and Borderless Economics, which shows how migration makes the world smarter. He constantly interviews political and business leaders, tracking developments from Brussels to Beijing and from Bangalore to the Bay Area, and draws on The Economist's global network of correspondents to separate the trends that actually drive the news from those that merely make headlines.

In his talks, Robert examines how geopolitics affects global supply chains, how American politics ripples through the rest of the world, and how the coming year's headlines might affect a given industry, illustrated with anecdotes from the dozen or so countries he visits each year.

Book Robert Guest for incisive, firsthand insight into the forces reshaping global business and politics.
