Baroness Sayeeda Warsi is a lawyer, author, businesswoman, philanthropist, and member of the House of Lords. She made history as Britain’s first Muslim Cabinet Minister, serving as Chairman of the Conservative Party and as a Senior Minister at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Born to immigrant parents in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, Sayeeda studied law at Leeds University and worked for the Crown Prosecution Service before establishing her own legal practice. Her parents instilled in her strong values, which led her to join the Conservative Party, where she became an advisor to leader Michael Howard in 2004. In 2005, she stood as a Parliamentary candidate in Dewsbury and, in 2007, became the youngest peer in the House of Lords at age 36. That same year, she gained international attention for her role in securing the release of British teacher Gillian Gibbons from trial in Sudan.
In 2010, Sayeeda was appointed Minister without Portfolio by Prime Minister David Cameron, becoming the first Muslim to serve in a Cabinet role. Her image in a shalwar kameez on the steps of No 10 Downing Street was widely publicised. She also became the first Asian to chair a major British political party. As a government minister, she advocated for faith and religious freedom, leading significant initiatives, including the campaign against forced marriage and addressing child sexual exploitation.
Sayeeda has been a strong advocate for social change, driving campaigns against the Alternative Vote system and promoting social action projects in various countries. She has founded four successful start-up businesses and played a key role in making Britain the first Western country to issue a Sukuk in 2014.
In academia, Sayeeda serves as Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Bolton and holds positions at several other institutions, including Georgetown University. She is the author of "The Enemy Within," which explores the relationship between Islam and Britain, and co-hosts the political reality show "Make Me Prime Minister." Additionally, she founded the Savayra Foundation, a charity focused on empowering women and promoting gender equality.
