Travis Mills's biography

At a glance

  • One of only 5 soldiers to survive quadruple amputation
  • NY Times bestseller: Tough as They Come
  • Founder, Travis Mills Foundation for veterans

Travis Mills is a retired US Army Staff Sergeant, motivational speaker, author, and one of only five quadruple amputees from Iraq and Afghanistan to survive his injuries. After an IED attack on his third tour of Afghanistan in 2012, Travis lost portions of both arms and both legs. He rebuilt his life from there, and his story became the New York Times bestseller Tough as They Come.

Travis founded the Travis Mills Foundation with his wife Kelsey, giving injured post-9/11 veterans and their families a free, barrier-free retreat in Maine. He's appeared on Fox News, CNN, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and now speaks to companies and organizations across the country through the Travis Mills Group.

For teams facing setbacks, restructuring, or burnout, Travis offers something rare: proof that resilience isn't a personality trait, it's a practice. His talks give audiences practical ways to push through adversity, support each other under pressure, and keep moving when quitting feels easier. Organizations leave with a renewed sense of grit and a leader's playbook for getting back up.

Book Travis Mills to give your team a story they won't forget and a mindset they'll carry long after the event ends.

Recalibrate: A Framework for Getting Back Up

Travis Mills lost portions of all four limbs to an IED on his third tour of Afghanistan. What followed was not a return to the life he had before; it was the construction of a new one. This session uses that experience as a practical framework for bouncing back from setbacks, major disruption, or any moment that forces a team to rebuild from where it now stands.

Never Quit: Leading Under Pressure

Quitting is rational when the situation is bad enough. Travis has been in situations most people cannot imagine and found a reason to keep moving anyway. This session translates that experience into a leadership framework for keeping teams intact under conditions of uncertainty, fatigue, or sustained pressure, drawing on real decisions made in the most consequential circumstances possible.

Bounce Back: 12 Principles for Overcoming Adversity

Built around the principles in his book, this session gives audiences a concrete, transferable toolkit for recovery, drawn from Travis’s own process of rebuilding identity, purpose, and forward momentum after catastrophic injury. It speaks directly to any organization navigating a period of structural change, loss, or the kind of difficulty that ordinary motivation talks cannot address.

Why we recommend booking Travis

One of only five quadruple amputees from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to survive his injuries, Travis authored the New York Times bestseller Tough as They Come and founded a foundation for veterans and their families. His lived authority on resilience translates directly into any leadership context where grit and recovery are on the agenda.
