Aaron Simmonds is a comedian who has been unable to stand for 30 years, yet he excels in comedy. His unique perspective on life, often from a lower vantage point, gives him a wealth of stories and a sore neck.
Aaron's comedy is rooted in storytelling, featuring clever one-liners and sharp observations. While his disability informs his material, it is not confined to it. He has a strong stage presence and is regarded as a promising talent in the comedy scene.
In 2019, Aaron debuted his acclaimed show, Disabled Coconut, at the Edinburgh Fringe. The show explored his complex relationships and the absurdity of “competitive disability,” addressing misconceptions about his abilities due to his upper body strength and sports background.
When Aaron decided to adapt Disabled Coconut into a sitcom, he collaborated with his friend Jon Stapley, a professional journalist and writer in London. Jon contributed valuable insights, including the nuances of language.
Together, they developed a sitcom pilot that received a Commendation in the “Screenshot” competition by South of the River and SISTER, and was selected as one of the final six for the BBC’s inaugural Galton & Simpson bursary from over 2,500 entries.
