Carl Miller's biography

At a glance

  • Host and writer of the award-winning podcast Kill List
  • Author of The Death of the Gods: The New Global Power Grab
  • Founder of AI lab CASM Technology
Carl Miller is an investigator, author, and TED speaker who combines immersive first-person storytelling with data and evidence to reveal how technology is transforming power, crime, and society. He is best known as host and writer of Kill List, the ten-award-winning podcast that reached number one in seven countries, including the UK and the US. His investigation into a murder-for-hire site on the dark net led to 28 convictions and over 180 years of prison time, and his debut book, The Death of the Gods: The New Global Power Grab, won the 2019 Transmission Prize. Carl founded the AI lab CASM Technology in 2013, now a team of 25 natural language processing engineers working with the World Health Organization, the European Commission, NATO, Ofcom, and BBC Monitoring to fight terrorism, radicalisation, hate, and autocratic influence online. He also coined the term SOCMINT, social media intelligence, with the former Director of GCHQ. He has spoken in Parliament and delivered keynotes for Oxford University, DEFCON, Google, and Shell. Onstage, Carl draws on dozens of long-term investigations, from police cyber-crime teams to fake news merchants, spies, and digital ministers, showing audiences who really controls AI, how crime has transformed, and how disinformation actually works. Book Carl for a first-hand account of the hidden forces reshaping power, delivered by the investigator who uncovered them.

Digital Geopolitics
Information spaces are now theatres of war, with state-aligned hacktivist groups coordinating attacks against Western infrastructure. From AI models and hyperscalers to TikTok's algorithm and internet protocols, technology has become a strategic asset in the geopolitical arena. Carl Miller has been at the forefront of democratic responses, delivering keynotes at NATO summits and leading tech teams to counter disinformation. He maps this new terrain, its rivalries and alliances, and what it means for global risk and businesses navigating it.
Cybercrime
Carl Miller led a four-year secret investigation into a network of organised criminal sites, resulting in 34 arrests, 28 convictions, and over 180 years of prison time. The case became Kill List, the global number one podcast and Guardian Podcast of the Year. Carl reveals how scam networks operate, build social trust, and recruit, then charts an emerging wave of scams powered by AI-generated manipulation, cryptocurrencies, and state sponsorship, showing where the threat is heading and how to prepare.
AI and Power
AI is reshaping power sociologically, politically, and economically. Chatbots are changing relationships, models can summarise video across languages, and prompting may be the only future-proof skill left. From watching criminals use AI to dissecting addictive technology, Carl Miller has tracked the hidden ways technology shapes our lives and businesses. Fresh from his five-part exploration of power and AI with Intelligence Squared, Carl charts the shifting power dynamics, how AI is redistributing power, and what we can do to reclaim it.

What logistics should I prepare before my speakers arrive?

Before your speakers arrive, confirm AV is tested, a green room is ready, and printed schedules are on hand. Prepare warm introductions for each speaker and brief your team on timings. PepTalk speakers come fully briefed, making event-day logistics smoother and stress-free from the start.
