Emily Leeming's biography

At a glance

  • Scientist at King's College London researching the gut microbiome
  • Author of bestselling gut health books, Genius Gut and Fibre Power
  • Columnist for The Daily Mail and frequent media contributor

Dr Emily Leeming started out cooking as a private chef on superyachts before the science bug took hold. That path, from professional kitchen to research lab, shapes her work today and her guiding belief that healthy eating should be simple and taste good.

Emily is a registered dietitian and research scientist at King's College London. She holds a BSc in Nutrition, an MSc in Dietetics, and a PhD in nutrition and the gut microbiome. Her research includes the EAT-FIBRE study, part of Cancer Grand Challenges Team PROSPECT, a Harvard University-led global research programme.

Emily’s book Genius Gut was published in 2024, followed by Fibre Power in 2026. She writes a weekly newsletter, Second Brain, on gut health and nutrition and contributes regularly to the BBC, The Sunday Times, The Telegraph, and The Guardian. She is also a columnist for The Daily Mail. Her media work spans television and radio, keynote stages, a TEDx talk, and high-profile podcast appearances, making her one of the most visible science communicators working in nutrition today.

Emily's dual background in professional cooking and clinical research gives her something rare: the ability to translate complex gut health science into food choices people will actually make. Her work connects laboratory findings to everyday eating, removing the gap between what the evidence says and what ends up on our plates.

Audiences leave her sessions with a clear understanding of how gut health affects energy, mood, and long-term wellbeing, practical ways to improve their diet without having to overhaul it entirely, and the confidence that eating well really can be simple.

Book Emily when you need complex science made genuinely accessible, and a speaker who leaves audiences not just informed, but ready to act.

Can PepTalk help plan the speaker programme for my event?

What does 'typical fee range' mean?

Speaker fees vary based on factors like event location, format, and availability. The 'typical fee range' figure gives you a baseline of someone's local, in-person rate sits, and we'll confirm the exact fee when you get in touch.

What logistics should I prepare before my speakers arrive?

Before your speakers arrive, confirm AV is tested, a green room is ready, and printed schedules are on hand. Prepare warm introductions for each speaker and brief your team on timings. PepTalk speakers come fully briefed, making event-day logistics smoother and stress-free from the start.

What's the difference between a keynote speaker, an MC, and event entertainment?
