Matt Frei

Matt Frei is a Channel 4 News presenter and Europe Editor who also hosts a show on LBC radio. He has reported from over 40 countries for Channel 4 and previously the BBC, notably serving as Washington Correspondent for both networks. Matt's focus on Europe has included extensive coverage of the Russo-Ukrainian crisis from the front lines. He began his career at the BBC World Service, initially in the German section, before transitioning to English language current affairs. In 1989, he reported on the first Intifada in Jerusalem and became Bonn Correspondent when the Berlin Wall fell. From 1992 to 1996, he was the BBC's Southern Europe Correspondent, covering conflicts in Bosnia, Kosovo, and North Africa. He then spent six years in Asia, based in Hong Kong and Singapore. In 2002, he became BBC Washington Correspondent, later presenting BBC World News America and the Radio 4 programme Americana. In 2011, Matt joined Channel 4 as Washington Correspondent and contributed to various current affairs programmes, including documentaries on Barack Obama and Donald Trump. As Europe Editor in 2014, he led coverage of events in Ukraine, including the crash of Malaysian flight MH17 and the unrest in Kyiv. He resumed leading Channel 4's Ukraine coverage during the Russian invasion in 2022. Matt has authored two books: "Getting the Boot: Italy’s Unfinished Revolution," published in 1995, and "Only in America," released in 2008, which examines the complexities of Washington, D.C. His work has earned numerous awards, including BAFTAs for coverage of the Gaza conflict and the Ukraine war, the Charles Wheeler Award for Outstanding Contributions to Journalism, and an International Emmy for News.
