Nigel Taberner is a former UK hostage negotiator and Detective Inspector who now helps organisations master communication, influence, and negotiation under pressure. Drawing on decades of frontline policing and counter-terrorism experience, he equips leaders and teams with practical tools to build trust, resolve conflict, and influence outcomes.
Nigel spent over 30 years with Greater Manchester Police and Counter-Terrorism Policing North West, rising to the rank of Detective Inspector. During his decade as a specialist hostage negotiator, he successfully resolved more than 130 high-risk incidents, including armed sieges, kidnappings, and suicide interventions, without a single fatality. He has trained negotiators across the UK and internationally, working with police forces, Special Forces personnel, and agencies including the FBI, as well as colleagues in Finland and Australia.
Through his stories from the negotiation front line, Nigel demonstrates how the skills that saved lives apply directly to business challenges. He shows how hostage negotiators build trust rapidly, de-escalate conflict, and make critical decisions whilst managing their own emotions. These same techniques help organisations improve communication, manage difficult conversations, strengthen leadership capability, and enhance team performance.
Audiences learn to listen at an elite level, how to influence, even without leverage, and navigate high-pressure conversations. Nigel's interactive masterclasses give teams hands-on practice with these techniques, whilst his conference speeches combine gripping storytelling with immediately applicable tools.
Book Nigel to transform how your team communicates, negotiates, and performs under pressure using methods proven in life-or-death situations.
Topics, sessions and talks
Nigel Taberner reveals how hostage negotiators influence outcomes without leverage, bargaining power, or incentives. Drawing on real-life incidents involving armed sieges and kidnappings, Nigel demonstrates how trust, emotional intelligence, and elite listening enable negotiators to resolve extreme situations. He translates these lessons into practical strategies for business, showing how organisations can navigate difficult conversations, influence stakeholders, and reach successful outcomes even when negotiating from a position of weakness.
Nigel Taberner takes audiences inside the rarely seen world of hostage negotiation, sharing powerful stories from the frontline of life-or-death situations. He explains how negotiators structure conversations, manage emotion, and build trust under intense pressure. Nigel connects these experiences directly to organisational life, showing how teams can communicate more effectively, manage uncertainty, and influence outcomes when stakes are high and tensions are rising.
Nigel Taberner explores why listening, rather than talking, is the most powerful negotiation skill. Through gripping real-world examples, he demonstrates how elite listening builds trust, uncovers critical information, and influences behaviour. Nigel shows how poor listening leads to missed opportunities, damaged relationships, and ineffective leadership. His insights help organisations strengthen relationships, improve decision making, and influence others more effectively through focused, intentional communication.
Nigel Taberner delivers an interactive masterclass that explores the psychology, structure, and techniques behind elite hostage negotiation. Combining theory, real-world case studies, and practical exercises, Nigel helps participants develop communication skills that build trust, influence outcomes, and manage conflict. The session enables teams to apply proven negotiation strategies in leadership, sales, and high-pressure business environments, strengthening their ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

No. PepTalk adds no booking fee, so you pay the speaker's fee and nothing beyond it. The service, from shortlist through to contracts and event-day logistics, is included. For repeat or multi-event bookings, PepTalk can agree preferential rates with your procurement team.
Share your event date, audience, format, objectives and budget, and PepTalk sends a hand-picked shortlist within 24 hours. Each suggestion comes with a profile, a fee and a recommendation on the strongest fit. Once you choose, PepTalk handles contracts, travel and logistics through to event day.
The typical fee range is the speaker's standard in-person fee in their home market, shown in their local currency. It moves with format, location, date and session length: virtual sessions and shorter slots usually cost less, while international travel and peak dates cost more. Send your brief to PepTalk and the team will confirm the exact fee in your currency.
Not all of them, and it makes no difference to your booking. PepTalk's network of 15,000+ speakers covers talent the team works with directly alongside speakers represented by agents and agencies worldwide. PepTalk approaches the speaker, negotiates the fee and handles contracting either way.
Three to six months ahead is comfortable for most events, and 12 months is better for large conferences, peak-season dates or one specific in-demand speaker. Shorter timelines are workable, and PepTalk regularly fills last-minute and replacement bookings within days. Availability is the constraint, so get in touch as soon as you have a date.
