Rob Caine's biography

At a glance

  • Former RAF Air Commodore and fast-jet pilot
  • Led the RAF's operational response during the Kabul evacuation
  • Founder of Decision Systems Group advising senior leaders

Rob Caine MBE has spent thirty-three years learning what it takes to make sound decisions when there is no room for error. A fast-jet fighter pilot who flew three operational tours over Iraq and trained as one of the RAF's elite weapons instructors, he went on to command at every level, from a front-line squadron to a two-thousand-strong training school.

In 2021, Rob was the RAF's operational lead for Operation Pitting, the evacuation of Kabul, helping more than fifteen thousand people leave the city as it fell. A recently retired Air Commodore, he ran UK Military Flying Training, a four-billion-pound enterprise spanning all three Armed Services, and chaired NATO Flying Training Europe. Under his command, the UK system recorded its best year on record, lifting output while halving failure rates.

Rob shows audiences how good people make good decisions under real pressure, and why even the best sometimes get it wrong. Drawing on his framework for decision quality in complexity and his forthcoming book, Decision Advantage, he turns three decades of frontline command into practical, repeatable tools. Audiences leave understanding not just how to decide better under pressure, but how to apply that thinking in their own world, with real stories and first-hand insight along the way.

Book Rob to learn from someone who has spent more than three decades making critical decisions when the stakes could not have been higher.

Decision Advantage: Calm in Chaos

Rob Caine MBE draws on thirty-three years in fast-jet cockpits and senior command across Defence to show audiences how fighter pilots and strategic leaders make sound decisions under pressure and complexity. Using his Decision Quality in Complexity system, he walks through how to prepare, perform, review, learn, and adapt, giving audiences a practical structure for deciding well in adversity. The result is a story-led session that turns high-stakes aviation experience into tools leaders can apply immediately.

Leadership and Judgement

Rob Caine MBE shares command lessons from environments where mistakes carry real consequences, from front-line squadrons to national training enterprises. He explores how senior leaders build judgement under scrutiny, balance authority with candour, and hold standards when the cost of error is measured in lives rather than budgets. Audiences come away with a clearer sense of what disciplined leadership looks like under genuine pressure, and how the same principles translate into any high-stakes organisation.

High Performance Under Pressure

Rob Caine explains what military aviation training reveals about staying oriented when it matters most. Drawing on his experience training fast-jet pilots and leading the RAF's flying training system, he shows how elite performers prepare for pressure long before it arrives, and how they recover quickly when plans break down. Audiences leave with a practical understanding of how to build the same composure and focus into their own high-pressure moments.

Building Capable Teams

Rob Caine MBE looks at how the best crews think and decide together, built on trust, clarity, and candour. Drawing on his experience commanding front-line squadrons and a two-thousand-strong training organisation, he shows how high-performing teams share information under pressure, challenge each other constructively, and avoid the silence that lets small errors become serious ones. Audiences take away concrete ways to build the same trust and openness inside their own teams.

Why we recommend booking Rob

Rob pairs genuine operational credibility with an ability to explain how leaders can improve judgement when the stakes are high. His storytelling brings his experience to life, giving leaders approaches they can apply immediately in high-pressure, fast-changing environments.
