Trevor Phillips's biography

At a glance

  • Knighted for services to equality and human rights
  • Times columnist and Sky News "Sunday Morning" presenter
  • Royal Television Society award winning documentary producer
Sir Trevor Phillips is a writer, broadcaster and public figure recognised for his longstanding work on equality, human rights and social cohesion. Drawing on decades of experience in politics, media and public service, he brings insight into how societies can confront complex issues of race, faith and freedom of expression. Trevor began his career in broadcasting, working for London Weekend Television before becoming Head of Current Affairs and later producing award-winning documentaries. With his brother, he co-authored Windrush: The Irresistible Rise of Multi-racial Britain, and the television series Windrush went on to win a Royal Television Society award. His later documentaries, including Things We Won’t Say About Race (That Are True) and What British Muslims Really Think, cemented his reputation as a commentator unafraid to explore difficult themes through data and storytelling. In 2003 he was appointed Chair of the Commission for Racial Equality, later becoming the founding Chair of its successor, the Equality and Human Rights Commission. His leadership made him the longest-serving head of any UK equality commission. Beyond public policy, he has held senior roles across corporate and cultural boards, including as Chair of Green Park Interim and Executive Recruitment, co-founder of data consultancy Webber Phillips, and a non-executive director of Mind Gym. He also chairs the global freedom of expression charity Index on Censorship. Today Trevor combines his role as presenter of Sky News’ Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips with writing as a columnist for The Times. Knighted in 2022 for services to equality and human rights, he continues to influence public debate at the intersection of politics, society and the media.
