Ellis Watson's biography

At a glance

  • Media executive and turnaround specialist transforming global businesses
  • Former CEO of Celador and of Simon Cowell's Syco Corporation
  • Served as Chief Business Advisor to the First Minister of Scotland

Ellis Watson has led turnarounds at global businesses across media, entertainment and transport, transforming struggling operations into profitable enterprises. His approach combines practical strategy with an ability to rebuild company culture from the ground up.

Ellis started as Marketing Director at The Sun during its peak circulation, then became Rupert Murdoch's first Head of Digital. As CEO of Celador International, he expanded Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? to over a hundred countries. He served as Managing Director of Mirror Group Newspapers, CEO of distribution firm John Menzies, and board member at FirstGroup, where he revived Greyhound's performance across the Americas. As global CEO of Simon Cowell's Syco Corporation, he grew The X Factor and Got Talent franchises internationally. At DC Thomson, he modernised the family-owned media company's business model. Ellis later advised Scotland's First Minister on private sector strategy.

Ellis shows organisations how to use disruption as a catalyst for growth rather than a threat. He has guided companies through technological shifts, generational workforce changes, and market upheavals by focusing on authentic culture over mission statements. His methods help leaders move beyond reactive management to build resilient organisations that adapt quickly to external pressures.

Audiences learn how to inspire teams during uncertainty, shift from activity to genuine productivity, and leverage diverse workforces as Gen Z transitions to Gen Alpha. Ellis delivers frank insights drawn from real turnaround experiences, providing actionable frameworks for navigating complex business challenges.

How do I book Ellis Watson for my next event?

Email ellis.watson@getapeptalk.com or call PepTalk on +44 20 3835 2929 (UK) or +1 737 888 5112 (US), and one of our speaker agents will contact you within hours to confirm Ellis's availability and fees. If you can, please include your budget upfront – it helps us fast-track your request. It’s also helpful to know the date, format (virtual or in-person), location, and a bit about your audience.

What is Ellis Watson's speaking style like?

Ellis Watson structures his sessions around case examples drawn directly from his executive roles across media, transport, and entertainment, using these to illustrate principles of leadership, brand, and organisational resilience. He frames these examples within a cause-and-effect logic, connecting leadership behaviour and decision-making to measurable commercial and cultural outcomes.

What topics does Ellis Watson specialise in?

Ellis Watson speaks on navigating complex leadership challenges, leading through change and disruption, and building and protecting brand value. He has held CEO roles at Celador International, where he scaled Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? to over a hundred countries, and at Simon Cowell's Syco Corporation, where he grew The X Factor and Got Talent franchises internationally.

Does PepTalk charge a booking fee?

No. PepTalk adds no booking fee, so you pay the speaker's fee and nothing beyond it. The service, from shortlist through to contracts and event-day logistics, is included. For repeat or multi-event bookings, PepTalk can agree preferential rates with your procurement team.

What happens after I send a brief?

Share your event date, audience, format, objectives and budget, and PepTalk sends a hand-picked shortlist within 24 hours. Each suggestion comes with a profile, a fee and a recommendation on the strongest fit. Once you choose, PepTalk handles contracts, travel and logistics through to event day.

What does the typical fee range mean?

The typical fee range is the speaker's standard in-person fee in their home market, shown in their local currency. It moves with format, location, date and session length: virtual sessions and shorter slots usually cost less, while international travel and peak dates cost more. Send your brief to PepTalk and the team will confirm the exact fee in your currency.

Have all the speakers on the website worked with PepTalk before?

Not all of them, and it makes no difference to your booking. PepTalk's network of 15,000+ speakers covers talent the team works with directly alongside speakers represented by agents and agencies worldwide. PepTalk approaches the speaker, negotiates the fee and handles contracting either way.

How far in advance should I book a speaker?

Three to six months ahead is comfortable for most events, and 12 months is better for large conferences, peak-season dates or one specific in-demand speaker. Shorter timelines are workable, and PepTalk regularly fills last-minute and replacement bookings within days. Availability is the constraint, so get in touch as soon as you have a date.
