Romain Muhammad is a people and culture leader, leadership coach, and author who helps organisations understand how fear, identity, and unspoken rules shape confidence and leadership.
He founded Room to Lead, a leadership, L&D, and organisational culture consultancy, and wrote What Are You So Afraid Of?, the book behind his flagship keynote. He is a postgraduate researcher at Birkbeck University, an Aziz Foundation scholar, a research fellow at the Royal Historical Society, and a 2026 Voice Award winner.
Drawing on psychology, sociology, history, and lived experience, Romain explains why capable people, particularly those who are firsts or onlys in a room, often hold themselves back at work. He gives leaders practical language and tools to build psychological safety, address imposter syndrome, and create cultures where people can think, speak, and contribute fully, rather than treating the symptoms of silence and disengagement. He has delivered more than 500 sessions for organisations including NASA, the BBC, the NHS, Yale University, Deloitte, EY, and Standard Chartered.
Audiences leave with a clearer understanding of how their own conditioning shapes their leadership style, practical tools to reframe self-doubt and build psychological safety in their teams, and language to talk openly about identity, belonging, and culture at work.
Book Romain to give your organisation the confidence, language, and tools to lead without apology.
Topics, sessions and talks
Romain Muhammad explores how fear shapes decisions, limits potential, and keeps capable people playing smaller than they need to be. Drawing on psychology, culture, and lived experience, he examines the quiet fears most people carry and how they are learned, reinforced, and normalised. Rather than promising fearlessness, Romain focuses on reclaiming self-belief. Audiences leave with a clearer understanding of how fear shapes their decisions, more confidence to speak up, and practical ways to reframe self-doubt.
Romain Muhammad takes a human look at behaviour, culture, and why change feels so hard. He discusses how culture, conditioning, and unspoken rules shape the way people show up, communicate, and lead, and breaks down why patterns like silence, conformity, defensiveness, and resistance to change repeat, without blaming individuals. Audiences leave with greater self-awareness and empathy, a better understanding of group dynamics, and practical ways to influence culture through everyday actions.
Romain Muhammad unpacks the everyday moment behind his talk's title, the question of where someone is really from, and uses it to open up bigger conversations about race, culture, and who gets treated as an insider. Drawing on his own lived experience alongside psychology, sociology, and history, he shows how identity is shaped by systems long before anyone speaks, and what that means for organisations trying to build genuine belonging rather than performative inclusion.
Romain Muhammad reframes imposter syndrome not as a personal flaw but as a predictable response to specific cultural, organisational, and social conditions, particularly for people who are firsts or onlys in a room. He gives audiences language to name what they are experiencing and practical tools to separate self-doubt from self-awareness, so they can contribute and lead without the constant pressure of proving themselves. Audiences leave with tools to interrupt the spiral in real time.
Romain Muhammad argues that most leadership development tells people what to do differently without explaining why they, and the people they lead, operate the way they do in the first place. Using his EAETS framework of education, awareness, engagement, tools and techniques, and sustainability, he equips leaders with language and practical tools to build psychological safety and lead with confidence, addressing the root causes of silence and disengagement rather than the symptoms.
Romain combines leadership coaching and organisational consulting, through his venture Room to Lead, with academic research as a postgraduate researcher at Birkbeck University and a fellow of the Royal Historical Society. That mix of consulting practice and academic grounding gives his work on culture and confidence real depth.

Romain Muhammad draws on psychology, sociology, history, and lived experience in combination, using his own book, What Are You So Afraid Of?, as the foundation for his flagship keynote. His sessions follow a pattern of naming a recognisable behaviour or cultural norm, tracing its roots through research and personal narrative, and then offering practical reframing tools audiences can apply directly to their working lives.

No. PepTalk adds no booking fee, so you pay the speaker's fee and nothing beyond it. The service, from shortlist through to contracts and event-day logistics, is included. For repeat or multi-event bookings, PepTalk can agree preferential rates with your procurement team.
Share your event date, audience, format, objectives and budget, and PepTalk sends a hand-picked shortlist within 24 hours. Each suggestion comes with a profile, a fee and a recommendation on the strongest fit. Once you choose, PepTalk handles contracts, travel and logistics through to event day.
The typical fee range is the speaker's standard in-person fee in their home market, shown in their local currency. It moves with format, location, date and session length: virtual sessions and shorter slots usually cost less, while international travel and peak dates cost more. Send your brief to PepTalk and the team will confirm the exact fee in your currency.
Not all of them, and it makes no difference to your booking. PepTalk's network of 15,000+ speakers covers talent the team works with directly alongside speakers represented by agents and agencies worldwide. PepTalk approaches the speaker, negotiates the fee and handles contracting either way.
Three to six months ahead is comfortable for most events, and 12 months is better for large conferences, peak-season dates or one specific in-demand speaker. Shorter timelines are workable, and PepTalk regularly fills last-minute and replacement bookings within days. Availability is the constraint, so get in touch as soon as you have a date.
