Steph McGovern is an award-winning journalist and broadcaster who co-hosts "The Rest Is Money" with Robert Peston, focusing on economic issues that impact daily life and clarifying business terminology. She frequently appears on "Have I Got News For You" and other TV and radio panel shows and previously presented Channel 4’s live lunchtime magazine show, "Steph's Packed Lunch".
With over fifteen years in financial journalism, including eight years on BBC Breakfast, Steph reported on economic news across the UK, broadcasting live from over five hundred businesses. Her goal was to reveal and explain the real economy, a mission she continued on her Channel 4 show with segments like "Small Business Market" and "Job Clinic".
In addition to news, Steph created the CBBC show "Pocket Money Pitch", aimed at young entrepreneurs. She explored British craftsmanship on BBC Two’s "Made in Great Britain" and co-hosted BBC One’s "Shop Well For Less" and "Watchdog". She also worked with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall on the health show "Easy Ways to Live Well".
Before her broadcasting career, Steph was the lead producer of financial news for the BBC, collaborating with Robert Peston during the credit crunch and banking crisis. She transitioned to on-air roles, delivering business news on 5Live, Radio 4, and Radio 2 before joining BBC Breakfast.
Originally from Middlesbrough, Steph began as an apprentice engineer at Black & Decker, winning the title of Young Engineer for Britain at nineteen. She later studied at University College London.
Outside of broadcasting, Steph engages in community and education initiatives. She mentors young people in Teesside and conducts workshops with schoolchildren in the North East. She is a patron of the charity Rubies, which supports disadvantaged children, and is a former champion Irish dancer.
