What is Black History Month?
Black History Month in the UK was inspired by similar celebrations in the United States, but it focuses specifically on the experiences and contributions of Black Britons. The event began in the US in the 1920s, and was first celebrated in the UK in 1987. It also takes place in Canada, Germany and Ireland.

When is British Black History Month?
Black History Month in the UK is celebrated throughout October. In 2024, it will take place from October 1 to October 31. This month serves as an opportunity to recognize and reflect on the contributions of Black individuals of African and Caribbean heritage to British history, culture, and society. In the US, Black History Month takes place every February.

What is the 2024 Black History Month Theme?
n 2023, the theme was "saluting our sisters," highlighting the significant roles of Black women in shaping British history.
This year’s Black History Month theme is “Reclaiming Narratives,” focusing on recognising and correcting the stories of Black history and culture. By highlighting “Reclaiming Narratives,” Black History Month aims to bring more attention to true stories and history.
