Martha Lawton's biography

At a glance

  • Financial educator and coach
  • Creator and host of Squanderlust podcast
  • Expert in psychology of financial decision making

Martha Lawton is a London-based speaker, financial educator and money coach, and creator of the podcast Squanderlust, which looks at the emotional side of money. Martha has nearly 20 years of experience helping people improve their financial well-being and exploring the psychological aspects of financial decision-making and behavioural change.

A passion for financial empowerment led her to begin training as a financial advisor, from which she soon gravitated to financial inclusion and education in the non-profit sector. Martha’s approach to financial wellbeing is centred on mindset and behaviour, considering the emotional side of financial decision-making.

By offering practical strategies to help people take control of their finances in a way that aligns with their values and lifestyle, she helps address common anxieties faced by professionals who, in spite of leading successful careers, feel uncertain about money management. In addition to her coaching work, Martha also consults for financial advisors, fintech for good, and social finance organisations, helping improve their products and services through better understanding of the psychology behind them. As the creator and host of the podcast Squanderlust, she offers a light-hearted exploration of why our financial actions often fall short of our intentions and ways to address them. Martha combines her background in financial education, coaching, and behavioural economics with real-world insight to challenge common misconceptions about money, providing audiences with practical tools to manage their finances in ways that work for them.

Why I Have a 'Naughty Old Lady Fund' and Other Money Mindset Hacks

They say "when you know better, you do better", but with money that isn't always the case. So why is it that all our knowledge and good intentions don't always translate into better financial choices? Martha Lawton explains how our basic psychology often gets in the way of our financial wellbeing and what we can do about it, providing attendees with practical strategies to change their money mindset and habits.

A Real-World Guide to Women's Financial Wellbeing

Women's careers and family lives often take very different paths from men's and without the relevant financial guidance it's easy to get off track. Personal finance media for women rarely goes beyond thrifty grocery shopping or vague platitudes about empowerment. Too many women lose confidence or even give up, resigning themselves to doing without the freedom, self-respect and fun that is true financial wellbeing. This talk is for women who won't settle for less. Martha Lawton outlines practical strategies for navigating the way to wealth on our own terms and in our own names.

Martha has an incredible gift of being able to distil overwhelming information into digestible and actionable insights. I'd recommend her in a heartbeat.

Taz Latif

Head of DEI & Community, Startup Discovery School

Martha has delivered several talks for the Institute for Financial Wellbeing. She is clear and eloquent and always engaging. What I really like, however, is that her talks pack a punch. I know that she is going to challenge her audience, not just entertain them.

Something we've not covered here?

How do I book Martha Lawton for my next event?

Email martha.lawton@getapeptalk.com or call PepTalk on +44 20 3835 2929 (UK) or +1 737 888 5112 (US), and one of our speaker agents will contact you within hours to confirm Martha's availability and fees. If you can, please include your budget upfront – it helps us fast-track your request. It’s also helpful to know the date, format (virtual or in-person), location, and a bit about your audience.

What is Martha Lawton's speaking style like?

Martha Lawton draws on behavioural economics and psychology to explain the gap between financial knowledge and financial action, delivering practical strategies for changing money mindset and habits.

What topics does Martha Lawton specialise in?

Martha Lawton speaks on money mindset and behavioural change, women's financial wellbeing, and the psychology behind financial decision-making. She brings nearly 20 years of experience in financial education and coaching, and is the creator and host of the podcast Squanderlust, which examines the emotional and psychological dimensions of personal finance.

Does PepTalk charge a booking fee?

No. PepTalk adds no booking fee, so you pay the speaker's fee and nothing beyond it. The service, from shortlist through to contracts and event-day logistics, is included. For repeat or multi-event bookings, PepTalk can agree preferential rates with your procurement team.

What happens after I send a brief?

Share your event date, audience, format, objectives and budget, and PepTalk sends a hand-picked shortlist within 24 hours. Each suggestion comes with a profile, a fee and a recommendation on the strongest fit. Once you choose, PepTalk handles contracts, travel and logistics through to event day.

What does the typical fee range mean?

The typical fee range is the speaker's standard in-person fee in their home market, shown in their local currency. It moves with format, location, date and session length: virtual sessions and shorter slots usually cost less, while international travel and peak dates cost more. Send your brief to PepTalk and the team will confirm the exact fee in your currency.

Have all the speakers on the website worked with PepTalk before?

Not all of them, and it makes no difference to your booking. PepTalk's network of 15,000+ speakers covers talent the team works with directly alongside speakers represented by agents and agencies worldwide. PepTalk approaches the speaker, negotiates the fee and handles contracting either way.

How far in advance should I book a speaker?

Three to six months ahead is comfortable for most events, and 12 months is better for large conferences, peak-season dates or one specific in-demand speaker. Shorter timelines are workable, and PepTalk regularly fills last-minute and replacement bookings within days. Availability is the constraint, so get in touch as soon as you have a date.
