Wayne McGregor CBE is a British choreographer and director renowned for his innovative contributions to modern dance. He established Random Dance in 1992, which later evolved into Studio Wayne McGregor, reflecting his diverse creative pursuits. This studio now serves as a hub for his experimental choreography and houses Company Wayne McGregor, his principal dance ensemble. The company, known for its technical precision and dynamic performances, is resident at Sadler’s Wells, London.
Wayne's work extends beyond dance into film, music, visual art, technology, and science, fostering creative collaborations that challenge conventional approaches to dance. In 2006, he became the Resident Choreographer at The Royal Ballet, the first from a contemporary background to hold this position. He has produced over 20 works, including the Olivier Award-winning "Chroma" and "Woolf Works," celebrated for their expressive depth.
His influence spans various artistic domains; he has contributed to theatre productions, opera, films, and fashion shows. Prominent works include choreography for movies like "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" and for artists at high-profile events such as the Brit Awards. Academically, Wayne is a Professor of Choreography at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and holds several honorary doctorates from UK universities. He actively participates in arts education and development, serving as Vice President of the Roundhouse and Patron of The Place.
Recognised for his pioneering approach, Wayne has received numerous accolades, including four Critics' Circle Awards, two Olivier Awards, and a CBE for Services to Dance. In 2021, he was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Prix de Lausanne. He is also set to be the Director of Dance for the Venice Biennale from 2021 until 2024.
