Stella Rimington made history as the first woman to hold the prestigious position of Director General of MI5 and the first to be publicly named, marking a significant shift towards transparency in UK intelligence. Her extensive career in the Security Service spanned over three decades, during which she led all three operational branches: counter-subversion, counter-espionage, and counter-terrorism.
