How caregiving impacts business
The impact of caregiving extends into the professional realm, with one in seven employees in the UK juggling their job responsibilities with caregiving tasks. Between 2010 and 2020, people aged 46-65 emerged as the dominant age group among new unpaid carers, accounting for 41% of this cohort. This demographic shift highlights unpaid carers' significant and growing role within the family unit and the broader societal structure, emphasising the need for increased acknowledgement and support for their invaluable contributions.
Recent research has revealed that when assessing a new job, people who identify as caregivers rank childcare benefits as important as annual leave or vacation time and even more important than a pension. As one working parent put it: “I've got to be able to take care of my family now before I can take care of my future self."
Trends in caregiving
According to Census data from 2021, there are approximately 5 million unpaid carers in England and Wales alone. If we include data from Scotland and Northern Ireland, the overall figure for the UK climbs to 5.7 million. This means that roughly 9% of the UK population provides unpaid caregiving. However, a study conducted by Carers UK in 2022 suggests that the actual number could be much higher, potentially reaching up to 10.6 million individuals. A significant portion of this group, 4.7% of people in England and Wales, dedicates 20 or more hours each week to providing care.
The trend over the past decade, from 2010 to 2020, indicates that there has been a significant increase in the number of unpaid carers, with an average of 4.3 million people, or 12,000 daily, taking up unpaid caregiving responsibilities. Furthermore, there is a gender disparity in the distribution of caregiving responsibilities, with women constituting 59% of unpaid carers. They are more likely to take on caregiving roles and dedicate longer hours to such duties than their male counterparts, particularly during the ages typically associated with workforce participation.
